Aquaponics
Farming
practices like aquaculture and hydroponics are successfully merged in an
Aquaponics system. Farming of fish is known as aquaculture and growing plants
in water is known as hydroponics. Fish and vegetables are growing together in an
aquaponics farming system. A fish tank, grow bed and a small pump are the basic
components required for aquaponics. Water from the fish tank pumped to the
elevated grow bed which flows through it and returned to the tank itself
continuously. The nutrients from fish tank water are absorbed by the plants in the
grow bed. Aquaponics helps us to enhance the organic food production
considerably.
The miracle of Aquaponics is that it helps to harvest two
crops from an investment for only one, just like the saying two birds from a
shot. We get chemical free vegetable is the top benefit of aquaponics.
Types of Aquaponics systems
There are mainly three types aquaponics systems are
commonly used; they are Deep water culture, media bed or recirculation
aquaponics, Nutrient film technique (NFT) aquaponics.
In
a deep water culture aquaponics system, the fish tank water pumped to another
tank where plants are growing on
floating rafts. Media type aquaculture consists of a fish tank, a grow bed
filled with gravel, clay balls or coir, and a pump. Water from the fish tank
pumped to the grow bed and it recycled continuously. While in Nutrient film
technique (NFT) aquaponics, the nutrient rich fish tank water is pumped to
channels or pipes where plants are placed in small plastic pots.
Benefits of Aquaponics
Benefits of Aquaponics
farming are as follows;
- Allow us to consume chemical free food.
- We can produce two fresh organic foods (fish and vegetables) from minimum input.
- Low investment required.
- High productivity.
- Minimum water consumption.
- Waste free.
- A source of additional income.
- Forget the watering and fertilization of plants.
- No need of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
- You can start an aquaponics system in small scale and expand it gradually.
Grow your own chemical free food for a healthy living.
