Bacopa monnieri (ബ്രഹ്മി)





Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is a small perennial creeping herb, native to the south Indian wetlands. It grows up to a height of 1m with a lot of branches. The oval shaped leaves of brahmi have 1-2 cm long and 3-8 mm broad. Brahmi is one of the oldest herbal remedies of the World. It has been used in Ayurveda for the treatment of various ailments.

Local names of brahmi 

Brahmi is also known as Bacopa monnieri, Bacopa, Andri, Jalanimba, Jal-brahmi, Sambrani chettu, Thyme-leafed gratiola, Nir-brahmi, Babies tear, Indian pennywort, Water hyssop, Jalanevari, Muttil, Kodakan etc.
In English it is known as Herb of Grace.

Medicinal uses of brahmi 

Brahmi has been used in traditional Ayurvedic treatment for epilepsy, asthma, Alzheimer’s ulcers, tumers, joint pain, ascites, enlarged spleen, indigestion, inflammation, leprosy, anemia, biliousness and more. It is also considered as a memory boosting tonic.


Home remedies with Brahmi 

1.   To improve brain memory retention capacity, chew a few leaves of brahmi in empty stomach.
2.   Taking fresh juice of brahmi leaves mixed with a teaspoon honey restores the tranquility of the mind.
3.   Consuming brahmi leaves along with grounded cumin and sugar is a best remedy to dysentery.
4.   Regular application of brahmi cures chronic skin problems.
5.   Apply brahmi oil to hair to prevent hair loss and it rejuvenates the scalp and favours hair growth.
6.   Brahmi drink tones the liver, eliminates all kinds of worms in the bowels, especially useful for nervous debility and improving the brain.
7.   To cure dysentery and diarrhea in children, make a paste of brahmi leaves and apply it to the child’s naval.
8.   Brahmi is widely used for its effect in blood circulation that promotes efficient function of liver, lungs and the kidneys.
9.   Use of brahmi oil cures dandruff problem and helps in proper nourishment of roots and promotes the hair growth.
